Nick Pugh's K5QXJ Hospital Report Friday May 9, 10:12 AM Hi all, The rumor this morning from the nurse aide is that we are moving to LOUISIANA EXTENDED CARE (L-TAC long term care?) that is on 9th floor today waiting for insurance approval and an available room. It is on 8th and 9th, but 8th floor is cancer patient. I asked what time is check out of hospital, and she laughed, this is no HOTEL!! Not sure what wing of hospital is extended care, we are now in old part of hospital. Nick asked last night for something to sleep, he got Bendryl and really slept hard and snored from 4am to 6am, then napped around 9am, Nick claims I snore EVERY night!, now in his therapy chair watching a DVD movie, Love Affair with Warren Beatty and Katharine Hepburn. He is off the hard painkillers since last night, only one or two doses, but his legs really hurt to transfer from bed to therapy chair with legs straight out. With moves coming this afternoon and therapy chair, it will be an active day, but that is good for Nick, packing and thrilled, thanks for all the good wishes, cards (he has 25 cards taped to his window! love all the support!) also touched by all the support of emails (my therapy) will keep in touch, JoAnn Thursday May 8, 8:49 PM Day 19 Hi All, Nick had a painful night, did sleep some and learning how to adjust Rx's. He is on 3 painkillers, oxycontin, oxy IR and marphine. His legs are very painful when moved any. His arms seems to be doing well and can move them around. Looking forward that he can move his legs. He did get new leg braces that can bend at knees and looking forward to sitting up in a chair. His legs will not have cast, he will keep the braces. He will get cast on his arms when the staples are removed in another week. Today he did sit in therapy chair with legs straight. Next week will be evulated for Acute care and rehab. Nick was more alert this afternoon and hoping to be reduced pain soon. Running a slight temperature of 101 that is common after a surgery. He ate very little but this is the most he has eaten in a week. I might temp him with food by nearby. He did get ice cream from the hospital that he likes and now watching more tv. Now Nick is in the healing mode, just great to be over all the surgery. Thanks for all the prayers and support. will keep in touch, JoAnn BTW, John Martin KA5BSE, is scheduled to come home Friday morning. Wednesday May 7, 4:24 PM Nick had 5th and 6th surgeries today on both legs, on left leg a 9 inch plate on tibia and 6 inch plate on right tibia. Surgery was from 10am to 2pm, total of 6 surgeries for 14 hours total. Surgery went great and no excessive bleeding that he had in other surgeries due to blood thinner for his heart. His wrist are still with splints, not sure when will be changed to cast. Dr Vizzi said he could be moved to ACUTE CARE within a few days when there is a bed available located on top floors of this hospital but not part of hospital, something like Louisiana Care? I expect Nick to be on computer soon as his arms are really moving. It has been 12 days in the hospital. I told the nurse to put baby powder on his back, she did not see it, I told her next to the salt shaker and Tony' cooking seasonings from home, Nick told her to get the right one, did not want salt or seasoning on his back! Also learned to drink hot coffee from coffee straw and not a large drinking straw He misses home but this will help him to work hard in rehab to get home soon. Thanks to all for prayers and concerns, it has been a great comfort to us to have support.! Have good wishes from beside the Louisiana friends and families, both Nick's cousins and JoAnn's cousin in California, daughter Nancy in Washington State, cousins in Arizona, New Mexico,Tennessee, Oklahoma, Nick's sister in DC, nephew in Vermont, many relatives in Texas, Quad in Philadelphia, friends in New Foundland, Canada. 4pm, they just rolled Nick back to room, he is in pain and not moving, he told the nurse to MAX his painkiller. Each day will get better, thankful the surgeries are over and the healing will begin! will be in touch, JoAnn Tuesday May 6, 6:30 PM Hi all, counting down to the last two surgeries on both legs on Wed morning. He is having a fixation of bilateral tibial plateau,( plates on both legs) atlease that is what the medical consent form said that I signed, Nick can not write yet. Yesterday he was able to sit up two hours in therapy chair and even took an hour conference call with several universites on their satilite project. Today he was able to sit up 40 minutes. Gaining strength in both hands, swelling is down, still has splints and should get hard cast soon. He was taken down for ultrasound of legs and no blood clots were seen, so that is great news for next surgeries! I woke up this morning at 6am and Nick was watching tv, could not believe Elvis Presley in a WESTERN and a pistol. What a HOOT! Keep Nick in your prayers for next two surgeries. will keep in touch and feel so blessed with so many people on our prayer line, JoAnn Monday May 5, 2008 1:15 PM Hi all, Nick is showing great progress each day. Last night, Michael spent the night with him at hospital and I got to sleep at home. While I was home, I checked out spots for Nick's future elevator so we are thinking this out. Today Nick was able to shave, really moving his arms, able to hold his drinks, working tv remote control, and now moving bed up and down with the help of long handle wooden spoon from home. He will not let it go, he made his sign of the cross with it when communion came this morning!! His new device of the day! Will not be too long before on laptop.
This morning he was transfered from bed to a therapy chair in sitting position with his legs straight out and was able to sit an hour with a back brace. He plans to sit up again this afternoon. Today he has seen both spine doctor and internist, waiting for cardio and orthopedic, seems Nick has all the doctors but a gynecologist!! Was thinking while under for surgery on Wednesday, might have his ear pierced! Nan thought to paint his toe nails difference colors would be striking.
Keep the prayers coming for Nick, gearing up for surgery on Wed, count down to dancing July 4, 59 days! JoAnn
